HSS DRILL BITS
HSS Drill Bits for Metal & Steel
Shop HSS drill bits at Order Electrical, with professional metal drilling accessories for electricians, installers, engineers, fabricators and other tradespeople.
HSS stands for High Speed Steel, a material widely used for twist drill bits because of its combination of hardness, durability and ability to withstand the heat generated during metal drilling.
For electricians, HSS drill bits are particularly useful when working with metal enclosures, electrical cabinets, trunking, cable tray, brackets, channel and other metal components where accurately drilled holes are required for fixings, glands or equipment installation.
Our range can include individual HSS drill bits and drill bit sets in a selection of metric diameters, providing options for everything from small pilot holes to larger fixing and installation requirements.
Although commonly described as metal drill bits, HSS bits can be suitable for a variety of materials depending on the individual specification. For demanding metals or repetitive drilling applications, a more specialised drill bit may provide improved performance and service life.
Choosing the Right HSS Drill Bit
When selecting an HSS drill bit, consider the material being drilled, required hole diameter, drilling depth and the type of drill or machine being used.
The correct drilling speed is particularly important when working with metal. Larger drill bits and harder materials generally require lower rotational speeds, while suitable cutting lubricant can help reduce heat and extend bit life where appropriate.
For stainless steel, hardened materials or particularly demanding applications, check whether a standard HSS bit is suitable or whether a specialist cobalt or coated drill bit is recommended.
For accurate larger holes in sheet steel or electrical enclosures, a dedicated sheet steel holesaw or other specialist cutting tool may be more appropriate than progressively increasing the size of a conventional HSS drill bit.
